Etymology

The word is cognate with Arabic قحبة (qahba), a well-attested Semitic term for a promiscuous woman or prostitute, which entered Neo-Aramaic dialects including Chaldean through centuries of close linguistic contact. In Chaldean Neo-Aramaic, spoken by the Assyro-Chaldean Christian communities originally from northern Iraq, the form gahba retains the same strong pejorative sense. Its Semitic root relates to a verb connoting crouching or lying down.
