Inherited from Proto-Slavic *kurьcь, a diminutive of *kurъ (rooster/cock), following the ubiquitous Indo-European metaphor linking cockerels with the male organ. Cognates exist across all South Slavic languages — Serbian/Croatian "kurac," Macedonian "kurac" — and the word has been documented in Slavic literary sources since the medieval period. Its barnyard origin has long been forgotten in everyday usage.

Cultural notes

"Kurac" is the dominant South Slavic vulgarism for the penis and functions simultaneously as a noun insult (calling someone a "kurac" means they are a contemptible person) and in numerous fixed expressions of dismissal or indifference. It is used without significant stigma among male peers in informal settings across Slovenia, though it remains firmly inappropriate in polite company. The same word is standard in Serbian, Croatian, and Bosnian, making it one of the most geographically widespread Slavic obscenities.
